History of Acura

Acura’s Innovative History

You don’t achieve Acura-level craftsmanship, luxury, and technological advancement in a single day, or even a single generation. The level of performance and precision of the Acura models rolling off the assembly line today are the result of 35 years of innovation. All that the brand has achieved over the years would take hours to divulge, but here’s a quick guide to the highlights.

1986 – The Birth of a Brand

Acura was birthed by the minds of Honda engineers who wanted to take the reliability and efficiency of Honda and infuse them into a luxury brand. It took only a year for these dedicated engineers to launch two luxe vehicles with tier-one performance, the Integra and the Legend.

1989 – The Creation of the Iconic NSX

It’s one thing to do a thing, it’s something else entirely to do it well. Acura goes beyond even that. In 1989, just three years after its inception, the brand dominated the supercar industry with the release of the NSX. The NSX was a unique model that had the racing chops to compete on the track and the everyday drivability to appeal to everyday drivers. Unlike other supercars of the era, the NSX had the reliability that its parent company was known for, enough cargo space for practicality, and clear road visibility.

2000 – The First Ever Three-Row Crossover SUV

By now you should be noticing a trend. Acura likes to be the first and in 2000 the brand released the MDX, the first crossover SUV with standard three-row seating. The MDX remains one of the most popular three-row SUVs on the market. That’s because the brand continues to combine luxury with performance. The 2023 MDX has open-pore wood accented and hand-wrapped leather surfaces with French stitching. Under the hood, an available 355-horsepower V6 engine delivers a thrilling driving experience for the whole family.

2013 – A New Supercar Factory

In 2023, Acura created a new supercar factory in Marysville, Ohio, aimed at experimenting and furthering the brand's reputation for innovation.

2024 – Acura Goes Electric

The First Acura EV rolls off the assembly line. The /2024 all-electric ZDX cranks out up to 499 horsepower, has a generous range of 278 miles, and can add 81 miles of range with only 10 minutes of charging.
